Visions of  our time . 10 years photography at the Deutschen Börse
29.05 to 19. 07.09

With subject matter ranging from landscapes, architecture, interiors, and portraits, the collection brings together top-class, mainly large-format works, and icons of contemporary photographic history. The photographs presented in the exhibition span a wide range from the classics of photographic history, such as Stephen Shore and Joel Sternfeld, through important representatives of the “Becher School,” such as Andreas Gursky and Candida Höfer, all the way to works of a younger generation including Beate Gütschow and Ricarda Roggan. Another focus is on diverse explorations of the theme of people and portraits in works by Thomas Ruff, Rineke Dijkstra, and Juergen Teller. The third focal point of the exhibition is documentary photography, with works by such photographers as Barbara Klemm, Sebastião Salgado, and Philip Jones Griffiths. Their photographs give intense impressions of historic events, crisis-torn regions, everyday life in the GDR, and working conditions in the Third World.

Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2009
Paul Graham . Emily Jacir . Tod Papageorge . Taryn Simon
29.05 to 19. 07.09

Paul Graham, Emily Jacir, Tod Papageorge, and Taryn Simon, the finalists of the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2009, impressively document the spectrum of human life in their diverse works. The color photographs by Paul Graham show the inconspicuous traces of everyday life in the US, and fit together to form a comprehensive, quietly reflective social study. In her multimedia installation on Palestinian intellectual Wael Zuaiter, Emily Jacir deals with themes like historic amnesia, resistance, and the logic of archives. In contrast, Tod Papageorge’s contemplative scenes of leisure and relaxation in his long-term study of people in Central Park, New York, seem like a glimpse of paradise. Taryn Simon breaks through this carefree atmosphere by showing what takes place beneath the surface of American society in images that are simultaneously shocking and aesthetically powerful.

Talents 15 . In Our Time . Anne Lass / Katja Melzer
13.06. to 11.08.09

Opening 12.06.09 . 7 pm

The places in the photos seem familiar, the people almost recognizable, the situations common, everyday. They show normality—so normal that it’s disconcerting. Where and when were the photographs taken? Who are the people in them? How are they connected? In the search for details that might provide answers, the viewer cannot find or decipher either meanings and identities, or relationships and histories in the photographs of Anne Lass. They are images of deindividualized people who find themselves in places devoid of history – documents of disorientation and interchangeability. Anne Lass’ skillful experimentation with anonymity and the lack of references is what makes her photographs so fascinating.
