Outside In and Inside Out
Notes on Robert Frank´s Films
28.11.2009 . 5 pm

Cinema expert Dominique Bluher will be holding a talk on the audiovisual work of American photographer Robert Frank on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009 at 5 pm. The event will take place at C/O Berlin, the entrance fee is 10 Euro/reduced 5 Euro (incl. exhibition).

Outside in and inside out – the topic of Bluher´s speech refers to one of Robert Frank´s quotes, taken from his video „Home Improvements”: „I´m always doing the same images. I´m always looking outside. Trying to look inside. Trying something that´s true. But merely nothing is really true. Except what´s out there. And what´s out there, is always different. ”

“These pictures come out of relationships, not observation.” Nan Goldin

Nan Goldin’s photographs are as touching and present today as they were thirty years ago. Their fascination does not necessarily stem from their subject matter—oscillating between glamour and the gutter, with moments of euphoria and happiness—but from their radical intimacy. Goldin approaches only those who are close to her with her camera, thus sensitively capturing identity, sexuality, desire, violence, sickness and mourning. She does not just empathize with the hardships and pleasures of her friends and family, but is herself therein an essential part. more

Robert Frank . The Films
10.10 to 06.12.09

In his films, Robert Frank examines the public and private aspects of American everyday life – the modern odysseys, the familiar speechlessness, bacchanalian revelries, and sexual freedom – without pathos, but with a touch of irony. Frankʼs films are unsettling because they do not draw clear boundaries between genres; biographic, documentary and fictional elements are seamlessly intertwined. more

Talents 17 . Life with Maggie . Ofer Wolberger/Jennifer Crowley
10.10. to 06.12.09

When you embark on a trip, you’re bound to have some experiences. That can certainly be said of Maggie, a young woman who has kept a colorful photo diary of all the places she has visited—from the beach in Pensacola, Florida, to the mountains of Monticello, Utah. The only odd thing about these travel photos is Maggie herself: in them she is always hiding her true identity behind a mask. Can these pictures still be called classic vacation photos? What is actually being documented here? Who is this Maggie, and what is her real destination? more

Close-Up
Work as a photojournalist at the 60th Berlinale

C/O Berlin, International Forum for Visual Dialogues presents the project “Close Up!” in cooperation with the 60th Berlin International Film Festival. From February 11 to 21, 2010, 18 young photographers will receive the opportunity to experience working as professional photojournalists at the Berlinale.

Show us your picture of the Berlinale! It seems like an easy task but it’s harder than you might think. The young photographers are given the assignment of presenting their personal view of the Berlinale in all its diversity—the red carpet, glamorous film stars, hectic staff, or behind-the-scenes secrets. Each participant will decide on a theme, embark on a search for motifs, select images, and put together a series of works for exhibition. The photographs will be shown at C/O Berlin at the conclusion of the Berlinale and the best series will receive an award.

Applications may be submitted immediately! Prospective photographers between the ages of 20 and 25 who are still enrolled in their studies are invited to participate. The following application materials should be submitted in printed form by no later than Friday, January 15, 2010: a brief CV with ten samples of work (max. size A4, no originals since the application materials will not be returned). Mail your application to project head Maren Isfort, Auguststraße 5A . 10117 Berlin.
